The aptly named band BRAVES gives us a new look at what it means to be comfortable in your own skin. In BRAVES’ debut video, prodigal model Shaun Ross exits a dramatically churning seascape to the soft melody of BRAVES’ new song. Turns out, he’s packing a sea monster sized cock.
We caught up with BRAVES to pick their brains about the provocative video. In the words of Derek Zoolander “Mer-man, pop. Mer-man.”
You boys might have some explaining to do. Tell me about the conversations regarding the concept for the video?
There were a lot of shocked faces and laughter and patting of backs. A little back-and-forth about whether or not to show the full Monty, but otherwise we were all in agreement pretty quickly.
How did the model react to your proposal?
I sent Shaun the song and he called and told me he loved it. Then I explained the video concept over the phone and he stopped, then said “Wait…I have to show my cock?! I’m in.”
The song Dust sounds very sensual and placid, yet in the final stages of the video you can’t help but laugh. How do you feel about that relationship?
It’s interesting. A lot of people laugh. A number of them scream. And some are deeply offended. For example we were in a meeting with a major label the other day, all was going well, everyone was excited, vibrations were high and then we showed the video…awkward silence. We haven’t heard back from them. *laughs* But that’s okay. Not everyone is going to get it. We want people to have their own experience with it and we feel great about whatever that is.
How big is too big?
Too big to fail.
Is this type of humorous video something we can expect from BRAVES in the future?
It is the kind of envelope pushing video you can expect from BRÅVES in the future. We like to push people’s buttons.
What comments are you expecting on your youtube channel?
I hope we get hate-mail. Lots and lots of hate-mail.
Why black and white?
That’s just how I received the vision. It’s exactly how I imagined it and black and white was part of it. I like the play of dark and light.
How would you describe this video to your mum and dad?
I described it to my mum like this: “You can’t watch it.” And to my dad I didn’t describe it at all. I just pushed play
