The Surge

The Surge, At Mount Sinai

In the spring of 2020, New York City came under a siege the likes of which none of us had ever seen.

The world’s liveliest city went quiet. Thousands of New Yorkers perished due to the COVID-19 pandemic. NYC became the global epicenter of a deadly virus run amok... ...yet a new class of heroes emerged into the public consciousness: healthcare workers. The doctors and nurses of NYC who woke up every day and put their lives on the line to save ours.

THE SURGE AT MOUNT SINAI, an original documentary, produced by CONVICTS and MOUNT SINAI HEALTH SYSTEM, is a memoriam to those we lost to the COVID-19 pandemic and a celebration of the heroism of the frontline workers who took the weight of the world on their shoulders...unflinchingly.

Just ask Dr. Dennis S. Carney, Dean of the MOUNT SINAI’s Icahn School of Medicine. As he said of the dire spring of 2020...

“I would ask our doctors and nurses ‘how are you doing this?’ And they would say, ‘this is what I was trained to do. This is why I became a nurse. This is why I became a doctor’.”

Or Dr. Jonathan Stoever, an ICU fellow at MOUNT SINAI, who said of NYC’s iconic daily applause for its essential workers...

“People clap for us at seven o’clock because they want to support heroes. But in real life, you’re not a hero because you were born that way. Heroes are normal people who just step up to the occasion, and I think that’s what all of us have done.”

And that, in our eyes, is always the crux of heroism: when the ordinary rises to the extraordinary. The stories of the staff and patients at MOUNT SINAI are nothing if not extraordinary.

Consider the incredible story of “Miracle” Larry Kelly, who spent 128 days in the hospital suffering from COVID-19, entered and emerged from a severe coma. In the documentary, Larry explains that...

“I’m here talking because I’m fortunate that I somehow survived, but a lot of people didn’t. I am so thrilled that the caregivers with me did not give up. I had a lot of help. I didn’t do it alone. When they talk about “we’re all in this together.” You gotta believe that. You gotta believe that in your bones.”

These are the stories THE SURGE AT MOUNT SINAI tells. The stories of those who, truly, were on the frontlines in the epicenter of the greatest catastrophe our generation has known.

The urgent need to tell these stories galvanized a broad community of humans--from the NYC creative community to Billie Eilish and Bon Jovi--who graciously contributed their time and talents to the creation of this documentary.

Plus, CONVICTS and MOUNT SINAI HEALTH SYSTEM were fortunate to find an incredible distribution partner in the streamer, D+. We honestly can’t think of a collaborator better suited to share such an important story with global audiences.

Created using innovative film and production techniques, THE SURGE AT MOUNT SINAI gives viewers unprecedented access to the inside of the MOUNT Sinai Health System during its darkest hours.

So please, watch the trailer here, then head over to D+ to check out the full film.
