No challenge is too daunting for SpaceX founder and tech billionaire, Elon Musk. Upon receiving word that a team of soccer players and their coach were trapped deep inside a cave in Thailand, Musk sprang into action to save the day. Even when no one asked him to.
Well actually, someone did ask, on Twitter. It seems these days, that the founder of Tesla has nothing better to do than lend his genius to the Thai Government upon request from random members of the public. On July 7, he took to twitter to share his, “tiny, kid-sized submarine” that was ultimately proven useless in rescuing the children. But A+ for effort Elon.
Not one to back down from a non-existent challenge, Musk brought his submarine to Thailand anyway. Literally to the actual site of the cave rescue. After all, who can resist a good publicity stunt?
On July 9, Elon shared a tweet, “Just returned from Cave 3. Mini-sub is ready if needed. It is made of rocket parts & named Wild Boar after kids’ soccer team. Leaving here in case it may be useful in the future. Thailand is so beautiful.” Oh Elon, very nonchalant. I’m glad you enjoyed your stay. Also what does he mean by, “In the future?” Does he mean the next time a soccer team is trapped inside a cave? Let’s hope that as a society we learn from our missteps and avoids this terrifying situation ever again.
“Although his technology is good and sophisticated it’s not practical for this mission.” Narongsak Osatanakorn, head of the rescue operations at the Tham Luan caves told reporters. Very polite. But we’re almost sure what he really meant to say was, “Go away Elon, no one asked for your help.”
The public responded to Musk’s involvement in the rescue with mixed opinions. One twitter user replied, “The unsung heroes here are the security personnel tasked with keeping Elon Musk from fucking up the rescue.” Others congratulated the founder of SpaceX for trying to help. Which, although unnecessary, is more than most of the world did, or could viably do given that not everyone has the facilities to throw together a submarine in a day or two. However, this is not the issue here. For even after the international team of cave divers and Thai Navy SEALs successfully rescued the soccer team, Musk refused to stop tweeting about his submarine, “Do you think the submarine had a chance to be deployed in time?”
Thanks Elon, but read the crowd.
